Leptin programs the fetus? (Leptin exerts a trophic effect on fetal pancreatic islets. Riksstämman 1998 hålls i
Göteborg den 24-26 november!
OBS! tisdag - torsdag. se vidare..http://www.svls.se/rskatalog/index.html). We find that leptin exerts a trophic
effect on pancreatic islets
of rats even during their intrauterine period of development. We find that these fetal islets express functional
leptin receptors and that
leptin can stimulate proliferation of fetal islet cells. These observations may have far-reaching implications. Thus
leptin level during
intrauterine development may program the fetus as to the anticipated nutritional abundance on birth. Mothers
who are too lean are likely
to give birth to babies that has a smaller islet cell mass which may predispose them to type two diabetes in later
life.
