during their intrauterine period of development. We found that
rat fetal pancreatic islets express leptin receptors. Activation
of these receptors induce proliferation of islet cells. These
observations may have far-reaching implications. Thus children
born to very lean mothers are likely to be born with a smaller
islet cell mass which may predispose them to type 2 diabetes in
a affluent society. Leptin seems to send signal to the fetus
about the nutritional status of the mother and programs the
fetus accordingly.
