We found that rat fetal pancreatic islet cells express leptin receptors that can activate these cells. Leptin induces
proliferation of these cells. These observation may have far-reaching implications. Thus, children born to "modern"
very lean mothers are likely to be born with a smaller islet cell mass, which may predispose them to type 2 diabets in a
affluent society. Apparently, leptin signals mothers nutritional status to the fetus and programs fetus as to what to
anticipate about abundance of food on birth.
