INSÄNT AV Md. Shahidul Islam DEN 06 :e MARS, 1998 vid 15 - tiden

Leptin appears to have a curious proliferative effect on pancreatic beta cells. Islam et al at the karolinska Institute demonstrate leptin-induced proliferation, tyrosine phosphorylation and c-fos expression in RINm5F cells. A Japanese group reproduces the similar findings and demonstrate that the proliferative effect involves MAPkinase activation. The implications of these findings are unclear. It is possible that leptin may belong to the soup of growth factors that determine beta cell mass by acting at different early stages of development. Placental leptin for instance may be involved in the determination of beta cell mass in the new born.
